So, it's now come to my third and final blog post as the intern at Blues & Browns! It's been quite an exciting month as we've been collaborating with Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers again for another Outlandish photo campaign! Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers is an Edinburgh based retailer and maker of Highlandwear specialising in bespoke kilt outfits.
Last year Blues & Browns and Gordon Nicholson Kiltmakers had their first Outlandish collaboration featured in a five-page spread in the Scottish Field. Photographed below:

So, we're back again with a follow up and we've been busy bees in the workroom! I've been attending the team meetings and the fittings where sketches are drawn up and ideas shared. It's really quite an organic process, the way Kairen designs, an idea will be tested and changes made after more discussions are held. We keep at it to get the final result!
There is extensive embroidery involved in the outfit and that's where I come in! Hand sewing the motifs can take quite a while, so it's my job to sew them onto the garments so as to ensure Melinda the tailor can focus her expertise elsewhere. Either on the other garments for the photoshoot or on customer orders.

On the day of the photoshoot I was acting as the runner and general assistant. I was also documenting the photoshoot for our archives with lots of behind the scenes photos which you can have a sneak peak below.
We went to some beautiful locations for the shoot which include, McNaughtan’s Bookshop and Gallery, the closes of the Royal Mile and the gorgeous Signet Library. Each place had a lovely historic atmosphere and serenity that just made it a small paradise on our doorstep.

It's been really interesting seeing how the team operates in the run up to a photoshoot, we have lots of discussions about all the aspects of the final looks. Sharing ideas about makeup and hair as well as the actual garments are all part of the process. At the beginning we draped the cloth over the mannequin to generate ideas for colours, styles and fit.
It has been an amazing time at Blues & Browns as their intern. The amount of support they gave was staggering and the help and guidance has been immeasurable. I’ve been given the chance to really challenge myself and improve my skills! I will miss everyone so much, but don’t worry, I’ll still be around!
Thanks,
Floraidh x
